We foster

DIVERSITY

Sign&Connect’s concept was born from the commitment to help people drop social boundaries to connect to each other.

We cherish cultural plurality that, if encouraged and well-accepted, fosters more genuine relationships between individuals and groups.

Discovering the Deaf community and Sign Language was an eye-opener for us, nurturing the will to bridge the communication gap between the deaf and the hearing world.

In our workshops we teach some beginners Sign Language but more than that we introduce some cultural info about the Deaf World.

The (hearing) participants are always extremely curious about the topic and they ask a lot of questions: How many sign language are there in the world? Why is not sign language universal? How are sign languages structured? How many deaf people are there? How deaf people learn to sign? Where could I learn sign language?

Sometimes stereotypes and wrong assumptions can be brought up, giving the opportunity to talk about diversity and how everyone can benefit of it.

According to the group and their curiosity, we can broaden the diversity matter and for instance talk about successful deaf people in varied fields like engineering, acting, dancing, practicing law, doing politics, running a business.

Showing that deafness is not a limitation when you want to be connected to the world.

— Marlee Matlin, Deaf actress and Oscar winner

From Deaf culture, the hearing society can learn to be more mindful of body language, more direct when communicating, perhaps more able to observe the world through a magnifier helping them to notice nuances and details they miss living in a sound environment.
